Batailles & blindes HS 5 Blitzkrieg
Batailles & blindes. Hors-serie 5BLITZKRIEG, among the most significant of the Second World War, the term Blitzkrieg or “lightning war” remains today associated with the traumatic French defeat of May 1940. However, this journalistic metaphor resulting from the first successes of the Wehrmacht nonetheless remains particularly vague.
This special issue aims to place the concept of “blitzkrieg” in the context of industrial warfare born in 1914-18. Faced with the bloody impasse of “traditional” tactics based on infantry assaults and the general blockage represented by trench warfare, the requirements and principles of a Blitzkrieg are gradually beginning to impose themselves on the belligerents. . How to reconnect with the maneuver? How to get a quick decision in a war that drags on? Everyone then provides their answers. The “fighter engine”, the armor, the aircraft, the redefinition of the place of infantry and artillery, etc., will then play fundamental roles. The fruits of these reflections, better assimilated in a Germany hungry for revenge, were the basis of the “Wehrmacht system” which would triumph in 1940.
