Der Weg der 5. Infanterie- und Jäger-Division, 1921-1945

Among the many photo reports about the German infantry or tank divisions that were published after the end of the 2nd World War, the comprehensive illustrated book of the former 5th Infantry and Jäger Division occupies a special place: With this book, it has been possible for the first time to depict the path and fate of one of the most famous infantry divisions of the German Army over a period of time, which began a few years after the end of the First World War and only came to an end in 1945, when the Reich fell into ruins.
Almost a quarter of a century is documented in this book by a wealth of photos and no one will be able to say which pictures are of greater urgency: those from 1921, i.e. at the time of the Reichswehr, visited the division as Colonel General von Seeckt, or the memorable photographs from his time as recruits, during training, in the clothing store or during sports. From the photos from 1938 and 1939, the viewer thinks he can feel the lightning that indicates the approaching war. The photographs from the six years of the war have the special urgency that is characteristic of images of infantry divisions that fought to the point of exhaustion in attack and defence, and whose men today make so little fuss about what they experienced and suffered. None of these soldiers from Baden, Swabia and other German lands wanted war. Placed in it, they did their duty.
The viewer cannot put down this large pictorial report without sympathy and shock. It is a document whose significance not only touches those who were there at the time, but also shows the younger ones what it was really like.
