Militaria magazine HS No 93 Ardennes 1944

I wrote this editorial on December 16, 2014, the date which corresponds exactly, to the day, to the start of the German offensive in the Ardennes. For several weeks, for Militaria and for Batailles, I have been reading reports written at the time of the events, or just after, by the protagonists of the two camps. I ended up soaking up the curious atmosphere of this battle, which is truly the swan song of the German army – because after its failure, everything will collapse in just a few months – and which, for the Americans sounds like a warning shot to their omnipotence. No victory is certain. This lesson is given in the harsh and icy landscape of the Ardennes, in the silence of the snow and the din of the explosions. More than ever, I advise our readers to go into the field to understand and feel the breath of war, even 70 years later.
