Nuts & Bolts Vol 17 Marder III sdkfz 138
The development, which led to the self-propelled tank hunter on the proven chassis of the Pz.Kpfw. 38, was rather complex. The basic history and development of the German anti-tank branch of the Wehrmacht has already been described in Nuts & Bolts Vol.7 (Panzerjäger I), vol. 14 (Nashorn) and vol.15 (Marder III, Sd.Kfz 139). Especially in the later volume on the Sd.Kfz. 139 you can find information on the origin of the expedient solution of the Russian captured 7.62 cm Pak 36, mounted on the Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) Ausf. G and H, thus converting these into self-propelled vehicles. The same can be said about its technical development, so that, with this second “Marder III volume”, we will concentrate on its successor, the Sonderkraftfahrzeug (Sd.Kfz.) 138 as well as the 7.5 cm Pak
40/3.
