Untergang Kampf und Vernichtung der 277. Division

The years 2004 and 2005 saw commemorative events commemorating drastic war events 60 years ago, including the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge, the last battle in the West, on 16 December 1944 and the collapse of the German Reich, sealed by the capitulation of the Wehrmacht on 3 May 1945. The end of the Reich also meant the elimination of the National Socialist reign of terror, which had also brought sacrifices to the German people and their
soldiers.

The Battle of the Bulge was preceded by the Allied invasion of France in June 1944 and, in the course of their powerful push
powerful push, by the Battle of Falaise in August 1944, which can be described as the Stalingrad of the West. Only remnants of German divisions were able to flee towards the West Wall. The pocket of Falaise and the failed Battle of the Bulge were the harbingers of the inexorable downfall of the German Wehrmacht in the fight against the Allied superiority.

The severity of the costly battles in France, in the Eifel and before that is exemplified in this book by the fate of a division and its soldiers: of the 277th Infantry Division, which perished in the pocket of Falaise and was reorganized as the 277th People’s Grenadier Division in Hungary In the Battle of the Bulge and the retreat to and behind the Rhine.
